A 97 minute feature film, Shut Up, Phoebe! is a snapshot of young adulthood, a time when one’s choices begin to have greater significance, though the future remains unclear.
After being cancelled online due to an unfortunate incident on a talk show, a young social media influencer, Phoebe, is left in the dust by previous sponsors, fans, and followers. Phoebe’s doting mother (her ‘Momager’) decides to orchestrate a highly curated, tell-all documentary to reframe her ostracized daughter in a more positive light. She hires Dimitri, a student filmmaker, and signs off on exclusive, around the clock filming rights, and, inevitably, everything goes wrong. Seen through Dimitri’s lens, the documentary captures Phoebe’s crumbling digital empire.
At the beginning of the documentary, Phoebe is given a miraculous second chance by a fresh-faced CEO, Olivia, who helms a socially conscious weight loss company. Olivia offers Phoebe an exclusive sponsorship, under the condition that Phoebe rebrands herself as a leader for social change. To Phoebe’s dismay, her mother urges her not to agree to the sponsorship. In a flurry of rage and independence, Phoebe fires her ‘Momager’ and embarks on a social media rebrand to become a public force for good. Absorbed by her rebrand, Phoebe loses sight of the relationships that truly matter, like with her best friend Violet. The documentary follows Phoebe as she adventures across the greater Boston area - to parties, historical landmarks, the wilderness, and even to an underground slam-poetry society. Unpredictable and ultimately lovable, Phoebe upends expectations and takes control of her own narrative.
